We are Disciples of Christ…

In the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), a mainline Protestant family of faith, we call ourselves “a movement for wholeness in a fragmented world.” Believing that “we’re not the only Christians, but Christians only,” we’ve organized our worship and life together around the open Table of Jesus, who invites all who are weary and ready to come and see.

History of PCCC

~On November 6, 1977, out of the common background of the First Christian Church of Minneapolis, a group of approximately forty-five people met to worship at Lindberg High School in Hopkins, Minnesota.

~The group talked excitedly about this new venture in faith, on which they had embarked, and consequently came to refer to themselves as "New Venture Christian Church." On Nvember 20, 1977, New Venture Church began worshipping in the facilites of the Creek Valley Baptist Church in Edina.

~Charter Sunday was January 8, 1978. On that day, the Church's constitution and bylaws were approved and congregational officers were elected.

~The congregation voted to affiliate with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) on July 29, 1979.

~The emphasis on growth and evangelism compelled the decision in 1980 to change our name from New Venture to New Ventures.

~In 1983, the New Church Development Committee recommended investing in a site at County Road 9 and Vicksburg Lane in Plymoouth. The congregation voted unanimously to purchase the property in anticipation of building their own church. In November 1983, after much discussion, the congregation moved from the comfort and security of Creek Balley Baptist Church to go forth into the community that the group had chosen to serve. The cross on the current communtion table is a parting gift from Creek Valley. So, to preserve the unique identity of New Ventures, the worship services were moved to the Northwest YMCA in New Hope in late 1983.

~The congregation gathered at the Northwest YMCA until November of 1987 when they moved again, this time to the Plymouth Holiday Inn.

~In November 1988, the congregation made yet another move, this time to the Plymouth Place Hotel, where the services were held in the theatre. With no storage space in any of the temporary church homes, members of the congregation carried all of the things needed for service and Sunday School.

~It was July 24, 1989, that the groundbreaking ceremony for the new church was held. It was a memorable occasion with the entire congregation breaking ground by pulling ropes on the golden plow, which Rev. Johns pushed through the area of what was to be the fellowship hall. The congregation voted in December to change the name from New Ventures to Plymouth Creek Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) to better identify with our new location in the community.

~An Education Wing was added to the church building in 1998 for Sunday School programs, choir rehearsals, library space and other church activities. A full-day, low cost preschool, Yellow Brick Road Child Care, currently shares much of this space, Monday through Friday, and well as our Fellowship Hall.

~In 2003, a group from Valley View Christian Church blessed PCCC with their membership, service and compassionate vision, soon after that church closed its doors for public ministry. Though sad to see a fellow Disciples congregation pass into union with the Body of Christ at large, we continue to draw considerable wisdom from the stories and people of its ministry, and are richer for their inclusion in the ever-evolving ‘us’ that is Plymouth Creek. PCCC runs a bus on Sunday mornings to and from Fridley, to assist members and visitors with health challenges in coming to worship, a service we are only able to do with the generous support of an endowment administered on behalf of the sale of Valley View’s assets. “…so we, who are many, are one Body in Christ…and members one of another…” (Romans 12:5)

~Coming full circle, in 2007, Plymouth Creek Christian Church was delighted to become a nesting site for Thy Word Worship Center, a new non-denominational church coming out of the Apostolic faith tradition, and affiliated with Shiloh Temple International Ministries. Thy Word and Plymouth Creek enjoy partnering in ministry, learning from our different experiences and worship expressions, and embodying the great breadth and depth of God’s love in Jesus Christ, who prayed that all his followers “would be one.”

~In 2008, PCCC celebrated our 30th Anniversary, a remarkable journey of continuing new ventures and deep faith. As this brief narrative describes, our family of faith has endured trials and rejoiced in celebrations through the years. But the dates of specific events in our life together only tell a part of the story. Throughout these three decades, the members and guests of PCCC have shown remarkable instincts for mission, an ongoing commitment to courageous stewardship, and deep care for the needs of all God’s creatures, particularly the ‘least of these.’ To that end, Plymouth Creekers have not only built buildings and held worship; we’ve fed the hungry, clothed the naked, visited the sick, welcomed the children and elderly and middle-aged, taught the faith to youth, learned the faith from youth, and much, much more. In short, we are a Great Commandment Community, always searching for new ventures in our mission to “love God with all our heart, spirit, mind and strength” and in like manner “our neighbors and ourselves.” So as we venture forward, we recognize gratefully God’s direction of unending, creative love throughout the years, and how it remains a guiding light into our future.

~And we welcome any and all, without exception, to come and see if there’s a new venture for you in our midst. Our table is open, and it’s set for new life.
